...where the dark secrets of the modern fairy tale come alive.
We are forced to grow up far too soon, and we quickly forget the innocence and wonder of our days of childhood fantasy. But what happens to these seemingly immortal fairy tales as we forget day by day?
Perhaps their world falls slowly into ruin, decaying as our memory of its beauty is erased callously by age. They grow decrepit, silently wishing and hoping we would just remember. They cling on helplessly, clawing away at their cramped niches in the deepest and darkest recesses of our minds. They dare not even let out a whisper, lest we take notice and violently shrug them off in our ostensible maturity. They wish we would bring even the smallest of lights into their world and, even if only for moment, allow them to be beautiful again.
I was reading a story to my nephew today, and it was odd that although I knew the story from childhood, I had not thought of it for what seemed like an entire lifetime. I wondered whether the fairy tale had been left to age in mind, long forgotten like Sleeping Beauty's castle - the kingdom reclaimed by nature. Yet for my nephew it was as new and exciting as any other story he had yet to hear. For while I was there to narrate to him the tale, it would stay forever young and perfect.

Our fairytales and myths DO live on within us, even if we don't acknowledge them. Otherwise, gorgeous editorials like this wouldn't resonate with adults at all!
Hauntingly beautiful...Tim Walker is the maestro! ~XO*
Hello, I'm new to following your blog. Great pictures!
I have those photos on my computer!! Tim Walker is one of my favorite photographers. Your post reminds me of Neverending Story. I always feel as if there's a world filled with fairies anxiously waiting for people to believe in them again. xxoxoxoxxo
Wow.. I love these pic's ( and teh big-fancy-ball-dresses,, Wow!!)
xx
Oh those fairytales can be quite dark.
Thanks so much for the note. I liked your take on it.
so amazing photos - i like the one with the skeleton most :D
I've seen these so many places, but somehow they just don't get old...
This was such a lovely post, you write so well. I belive in fairytales and magic and immortality even if I'm too old!It seems Tim Walker does too....
So ethereal pictures!!!!
And love the quote ...where the dark secrets of the modern fairy tale come alive.Hope everything is ok, DP
xoxo
I've never thought about it that way, yet I do suppose it's very true. The stories must wither away like a neglected flower or a starved vagabond. They must turn into creatures of the night and lurk around in the corners of our minds searching for something to grab onto.
xo,

Oooh, and I nearly forgot!
The dresses are GORGEOUS!
WOW!
These girls remind me of Tilda Swinton. She is the true queen.
For me, revisiting old fairy tales often end up being disappointing...my imagination was more active when I was young and now I feel as if pieces of the stories are missing...but they're pieces I had invented in my head!
haunting and beautiful.
It has its own special romance. Great post!
Woah woah, I love the photo with the spiderweb.
I've always loved fairytales, but I don't think its too healthy to have them in mind all. Also, it actually bothers me a little when some girls I know are all like "I want that fairytale ending!"
Loving the full ball skirt :)
I love the pictures. I've got a young nephew who was born in Jan. I want to read him some stories.
this reminds me in satc when carrie was reading the story to charlotte's daughter & said something like, "you know it doesnt always turn out that way." but i suppose its good to believe in fairy tales as long as possible when you're young. kids should be kids, we have the rest of our lives to be serious and stressed out!
nice clothes ;)
Once again--the photos are ethereal and gorgeous, and your writing breathtaking as well.
You are one talented guy, by the by.
Lovely photos. So elegant, with that wonderful dose of fantasy and horror I love so dearly.
I could not stress the importance of growing up with fairy tales enough. It is what keeps the imagination strong and alive through your entire life. It's quite sad seeing children who've been deprived of it. There isn't the same sense of wonder and awe about them, and I believe that that is very important.
Wonderful post Dapper :]
Those images are so eering and beautiful and you describe the wonder of fairytales beautifully. It is amazing how these can last a lifetime. I sometimes long to go back and indulge in them but am afraid that they wont be the same. x
i love the one with spider web!
wauw the fifth picture is beautiful
ooh I love Tim walker, he makes me want to believe in fairytales again!
Coincidentally, we studied a poem in my English Class today on a Fairytale. I'll put it up later. And I LOVE Tim Walker
I am reading Alice in Wonderland again right now and it is great because each time I read it seems different to me. I still remember saturday mornings at home whan my father used to tell me fairytales, every saturday morning. It is one of the best memories I have from my childhood.
Great post as ever.

That is such a gorgeous editorial! I think all thinks slowly decay at some point... I used to think there were certain things I'd never forget... alas at age 19 I already have!

I want a sequined mermaid tail! It's amazing. Definately wouldn't want to be stuck in that spiders web though! :) x
i love the effects, it has a gothic feel to them.
i hope you weren't reading the grim brothers to your nephew! or at least gave him the disney versions :)
this is an amazing shoot! i love the one with the mermaid dress. this is genius work.
hey the skeleton one reminds me of The Late Mr and Mrs Comfort by Richard Avedon (in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, 1994)
Such beautiful images, like a fairytale in photographs!
Tim Walker is amazing. The 'dance with death' photograph is so creepy! And I love the one below it.
