The Art of Life

This post is actually pre-scheduled for I am currently enjoying a brief sojourn at the hospital. However not to worry, whilst I am away please do come inside and make yourself at home. If you should so happen to find your way through to the kitchen and into the larder, I hope you shall find it suitably stocked with an interesting array of teas, cakes and other sundries. If the feeling should perhaps take you, there are a number of thick wool blankets in the linen cupboard, so why not curl up on the sofa?

Man with a Movie Camera
is a 1929 silent documentary by Dziga Vertov. It has no story, no script, no actors. It is quite simply a day in the life of citizens in the Soviet Union. It is an artistic exploration through the medium of film, and in that endeavour it is pure magic. For those interested in film production, the skills and techniques used this piece of early cinema are quite stunning in their complexity and variation.

This film is about life, yet more importantly, the art that is life.

Currently playing: Tulips - Bloc Party

Wonder if that documentary partially inspired Baraka. Love it, by the way.

Aaaaand, what's better than Bloc Party? Absolutely nothing. Just saw them in a smallish venue and they were so, so incredible.

As someone who practically has to permanently reserve a hospital bed at least once every summer, I have sent my lovely healing fairies your way. They will dance their way to your bedside and whisper songs through your entire body, sending rippling waves of warmth and happiness that should hopefully lessen any negative feelings one may have.
Oh, I've seen that documentary! Twice, actually. Once in my film studies class, and once in one of my Art History courses.

Hope you are feeling okay and that all is well with you. Look after yourself.

You know, I love little productions like this. It seems that we as humans have gotten so "immediate demand, immediate response" that we want action, we want high speed, we want progression at this insane rate. Sometimes its nice to take a step back and appreciate the finer things :)

Hope all goes well! The video is great. It is frenetic, charming, simply complex, gritty and real, just like our lives. Fantastic.

It was great to see this. I just came from a aviation museam of 1940's fighter planes, including the life during this time. So it is interesting to see how people lived in different eras.

Be well!

Hope you're doing ok! Love the idea of the silent documentary (sure beats the so-called reality TV that's dominating the screens these days). I think it also must be so much more fascinating, considering it's the Soviet Union during that time. Thanks for sharing this and hope you get to enjoy the weekend!
