The Only Time Is Now

Harper's Bazaar
November 2007
Photographer: Mario Sorrenti

An editorial that has been posted on numerous occasions upon numerous blogs, however one that I feel to be quite appropriate to this moment in time. As we slip into a new decade there is the joyous infinity of possibilities and choices. However it also happens to be a time of reflection, whether it be based within the passing year, the passing decade, or indeed the passing of Time itself. I really do wonder how fashion and our lives will develop in this upcoming new decade. Whichever path it may take, there may just be a little piece or two of its complex and richly detailed history that finds its way onto this blog.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to visit.
Hope you have a wonderful New Years.

See you in the new decade!

Lots of love,
xxxx

I Save You Big Money!

Fashion, that being the realm distinct from general dress and clothing, retains today more than ever the illusionary glare of flippancy and excess. However for the most parts, one is able to understand high prices due to the high quality materials and craft invested in certain pieces. A pair of £500 Rick Owens boots or £1000 Chronicles of Never leather jacket, whilst not being an everyday purchase, are frequently bought after months of saving by select consumers.

With fashion prices as they are today, it takes something rather...special...to really stand out to me. As such when I saw oki-ni stocking a selection of certain pieces by a label named Florian, I was speechless.

This is the full range, of what are optimistically called 'Rope Necklaces'.

As you can clearly see, what they are selling is - a long piece of red rope...

...for the amazingly low price of £215. No seriously. For those of you across the pond that is around $340.

My only reaction was...

So, for those individuals out there of questionable states of mind, who actually see a fashion accessory for sale, here is dapper kid's alternative to the Florian Rope Necklace for way less money, so that you have more money to, as I assume from your spending habits and judgement, burn in front of homeless people this Christmas. Catchy title no?

A quick search on everyone's favourite search engine reveals the Marine Super Store who boast a red rope for the amazingly cheap price of 20p a meter. That is £0.2o. Or, to put it another way, you could purchase 1,075 meters of this rope instead of buying the Florian piece. Screw a necklace, you could fashion a whole closet of outfits with that much rope!

Of course the pedantic amongst you may point out that the Florian piece is a silk rope, thereby demanding a higher price. However a similar search for silk rope throws up a number of alternatives also. Primarily consisting of online stores catering to certain adult proclivities, red silk rope is actually surprisingly affordable.

A rather charmingly named Bound-to-Please offers 11 meters of silk rope for only £5.95.

Of course higher quality is always available. A certain Deviant Play offers 10 meters of quality red silk rope for, the still wallet friendly, £8.95.

Seriously though - Florian, you leave me utterly baffled and oddly angry.

Drifting Across Ice and Water

Winter in the city brings with it a wonderfully unique spectrum of colours and textures. From the frosty steel blue glints of Jack Frost's fingers drawn carefully over concrete to the grey flecked slushy furrows left in the wake of so many feet on the pavement.

Snow and ice tends to well up my desire to wrap up in colourful handknits and pull on a good pair of dark boots. However along with that more vibrant side, I always feel a draw from the simpler side of things. Crisp whites and blues to reflect the freshness of wintry weather, which the daily traffic of the city instantaneously obscures. A clean dusting of snow gives way to the heavy greying sludge blanketing the streets. I suppose that this fresher side, in terms of colours, of Winter clothing which comes to my mind is more suited to the New Year's Winter rather than the Year End's. It is perhaps the run up to Christmas which requires something more festive, however with the fresh year, there is something to be said for an equally fresher look.

American Birdseye Crew Knit
Woolrich
(£130 via My Wardrobe)

Ice, sea, water, sun, frothing surf. Whilst it may be cold and crisp, it is still quite the inviting image. Indeed my inspiration was first satisfied by the navy and white crew knit by Woolrich (pictured above). Suitably refreshing in its colours and simple design, it has a warmth and classic styling which seems the perfect piece for carrying you through the New Year's Winter. However, this is a colour scheme and inspiration which comfortably works across into Spring attire.

Derive Drift
Hixsept

I found myself pleasantly surprised with the latest look book by Hixsept for their collection entitled Derive Drift. I enjoyed the design of the look book, for not only were there the images of the looks themselves, but rather an attempt was made to create a coherent visual look book of the ideas and inspirations behind the clothes themselves. Film stills, literary quotes and even painted pieces went into the compilation, and whilst I have only posted a few of the images, I would sincerely recommend my readers to view it in its entirety.

As I have often written before, I believe the creation of a look book to be an art in itself, which both complements but also furthers the image of a collection as a whole. I found myself engaged by the Hixsept look book not only because the images were interesting to look at, but also for how they helped in constructing a better framework with which to approach the collection. That is not to say that the look book forces one to see the collection in any specific method, but rather that it gently guides and helps one to understand better the thought processes behind it.

This fusion of visual mediums in order to express the collection is perhaps unsurprising when once considers that the label was actually created by two French graffiti artists aptly named Hëx and Hept. They write of their work that 'Each collection is a challenge. A sentence, an image, a print, a garment, a pattern, a detail, nothing's left to luck'. It is this desire to create a highly detailed image in its entirety for each collection, which allows for such a method of communication. It is one which I feel succeeds and makes for a very interesting look book, if not simply because of the clothing it represents.

The collection itself was actually based upon the idea of drifting, with references to water and wilderness running throughout. The raw quality of such inspiration is no doubt found within the colours of the collection, with the breadth of blues and khakis giving a wonderfully fresh wintry edge to the clothing. The garments are quite simple in their design, and yet the careful employment of the stripes and patterning enables a sense of visual depth, which adds to the interest of the pieces. I was particularly fond of the cut of the navy blue cotton trousers and the jersey t-shirt. Indeed I always feel that a label which cuts the basics in a way which I like, will usually find me admiring their other work far more.

(Oh and inevitable beard envy of the model)

Sunday Viewing: [Rec]

The flu is about as pleasant as having to catch a wily skunk with your fumbling hands, hold it up high and lick it. Whilst incidentally also having to do so totally naked in a field of ice...which I imagine a few people out there in the vastness of it all probably find rather appealing, however certainly not myself. I have always felt the flu is far too blunt as an ailment, it grips you rather violently and turns you into a zombie overnight (well, without the sudden dietary urge for human flesh and brains).

In the spirit of the living dead, I thought it would be rather nice to share one of my favourite modern zombie movies. If you were expecting a Romero flick, you have the wrong director, and in fact the wrong country. I would like to point your attention towards an amazing Spanish horror movie entitled [Rec].

If you happen to scare easily, you may want to avoid this. I tend to find most so-called horror movies these days rather lacking, making up for their absence of actual horror through excessive gore, however this movie certainly does not disappoint on either account. Indeed it may just leave you shaking for days.

So come on in, curl up on the sofa with a blanket, take a hot cup of tea and a cupcake, gather your wits about you and enjoy...
